According to the National Library of Medicine, fasting is a part of many religious, health, and weight loss practices. Although controversial, some studies show that intermittent fasting is very beneficial for your overall health. The trick to fasting is knowing what type of fast you want to engage in and what the benefits and risks are.
People usually only use a complete fast or dry fast for religious purposes because it is an extreme fast. During a dry fast you do not take in any food at all. Most people who participate in a dry fast feel weak, dizzy, and fatigued. It is dangerous to dry fast for too long because your body goes into a starvation reaction after around 24 hours unless you do it regularly. The benefits of a dry fast are said to be spiritual clarity and cognition. It is often practiced for endurance or to show belief in a specific religion or deity.
A liquid fast is less extreme than a dry fast. It involves taking in only liquids for nourishment. The purist form of a liquid fast is when you use only water for the fast. You spend the day only drinking as much water as you want. Most people believe in the water fast for eliminating toxins but it can be dangerous if you have another health condition that might interfere. It is better to do a clear liquid fast or a juice fast, if you have problems with your blood sugar, blood pressure, or cardiac function.
A partial fast is a fast where you only eat certain foods. Usually a partial fast contains only fruits, only vegetables, or no meat. Though there are only meat fasts, they usually are not recommended. Partial fasts work just as well as other fasts but not as quickly. Some partial fasts are one food fasts such as only a specific type of fruit or vegetable. Most partial fasts work for those with dietary or other restrictions. They also are a detox method for those who are diabetic or who have blood sugar problems.
Partial fasts are often recommended for those that cannot handle full fasts. Most people who use them need to cut specific foods or sugars out of the diet for a short time due to medical reasons.
Fasting is not without its dangers. Total fasts and liquid fasts can send your body into shock. Some fasts will send your body into a state similar to diabetic shock called ketoacidosis. This is the precursor for kidney failure. Ketoacidosis only occurs when someone has been fasting for more than one day and without a doctor’s supervision.
If you are deciding on a fast, talk to a medical professional. They can explain the benefits and dangers of fasting as well as recommend a fast that works with your health and overall body condition. Although fasting for a short period is usually safe, fasting for longer than a day or two can seriously harm your health.
