Fasting for a Drug Detox: Is it Safe?

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there are many perfectly acceptable treatments for drug addiction. Many of these treatments are offered free or low cost. Unfortunately, fasting is not one of them. Many people think that fasting is a very bad idea when you are coming off drugs or alcohol. Although people often try it, it is not a good idea for coming off most of the drugs or alcohol.

Fasting

Fasting is the practice of depriving yourself of food for a short time in order to cleanse your system. Many people believe that the different types of fasts detoxify your liver, kidneys, and other vital organs. There are three main types of fasts. These are:

  • full fast – where you only take in nothing for the time that you are fasting. This is also called a dry fast where you have nothing for however long you are fasting.
  • liquid fast – a liquid fast is when you take in only liquids. Usually these are only clear liquids such as  broth, water, or some other type of liquid such as lemon water.
  • partial fast – the partial fast is a partial food fast. You only eat certain foods such as salads or leafy green vegetables. Most people try to eat vegetarian or at least just chicken.

Although there are other types of fasts, these are the three main types that most people engage in.

Safety

Fasting for a Drug Detox

A full fast is where you consume nothing for the entirety of the time you choose to fast.

No, fasting for a drug detox is not safe. When you have damaged your organs by taking drugs or alcohol it is not a good idea to put a further strain on them. There are also some types of drugs and alcohol that will kill you if you come off them without help. These two are benzodiazepines and alcohol. Stopping either of these drugs rapidly can kill you. If you need treatment for either of these, seek help before stopping them.

Fasting would be a good idea if your body was healthy. Drugs and alcohol damage vital systems. Although this damage is often reversible, fasting while this damage is still present is not a good idea. It puts too much strain on your organs.

Lemon Juice and Water

If you insist on fasting or you cannot stomach food, lemon juice and water or Gatorade are two good options. You can mix lemon juice and water and have a nutritious drink. This at least gives you vitamin C and liquids which most of the time you need when you are trying to come off drugs or alcohol.

Crackers and Broth

Another thing to try is crackers and a warm broth. It is both soothing and a comforting on the stomach. This combination is good if you can stomach solid food. One of the things about coming off drugs or alcohol is that you need to eat. Your body needs the nutrients that soft food provides. Warm broth and crackers, particularly a wheat cracker is very good for you.
